What You Left Behind

So close yet so far

We see the same sea

We wish upon a star

Still you are not with me

Your voice was so sweet

Not for the U.S. Navy

But for when we meet

With our hearts strong and heavy

I listen to the bells

Ringing and chiming and crying

To forget what your story tells

And watch them all trying

Hearing you speak back then

I would always listen enchanted

Now I count to ten

Hoping my wish has been granted

You served your country true

Though so many won’t know

So I will stand too

So that they won’t go also

Even though you have left

You didn’t leave me blind

And though you are bereft
